It is extracted as an exudation from trees and is then solidified. Once solidified, the resin appears as pale ivory-yellow granules, soft and brittle, with a distinctive odor.
In restoration and art, damar resin is used to prepare final varnishes for paintings, that is, as a protective varnish against wear and discoloration due to time.It is also commercially available mixed (from 20 to 30-40% damar) with turpentine, linseed oil, alcohols, and other hydrocarbon-based solvents. The resulting mixture is marketed as "damar varnish," which has a slightly caramelized texture.
